| Chemist and educator, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Self-taught, he became professor of chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania (1818–47). In 1801 he found the means of producing high temperatures by burning hydrogen and oxygen, and invented the blowtorch. |
