| Botanist and ecologist, born in Wichita, Kansas, USA. He taught zoology at Washington State College (1948–51), then became a senior scientist in biology at Hanford Atomic Products Operations (1951–4), and taught at Brooklyn College (1954–64), Brookhaven National Laboratory, NY (1964–6), the University of California, Irvine (1966–8), and Cornell (1968–80). He made major contributions to ecological niche theory in his classifications of plant communities. |
