| Astronomer, born in Jackson, California, USA. He was professor of mathematics and astronomy at the University of the Pacific (1891–5), then joined Lick Observatory, CA, where he became director (1930–5). His discovery of more than 3000 double stars gained him the gold medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1932. |
