| Art historian, born in New York City, New York, USA. He studied at Columbia University, Harvard (1937 PhD), and New York University. He taught at New York University (1934–9) and at Queens College (1939–56). A noted art historian of primitivism and contemporary art, he was the first director of the Museum of Primitive Art, New York City (1957–73). He was married to Louise Bourgeois. |
