| biography:
| Slavic studies specialist and educator, born in Waterville, New York, USA. Known for his work on conservatism in modern Europe and anti-Semitism in modern France, he taught for many years at Rutgers (from 1954), where he was director of the Russian and East European Institute (1971–6). He served concurrently as a distinguished professor of history at the University of Indiana, Bloomington (1967). A consultant for the US Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (1964), he was president of the American Association of Advanced Slavic Studies (1978–9), and wrote many books and articles. |
