| biography:
| Metallurgist, born in Coleford, Gloucestershire, SWC England, UK, the son of David Mushet. In 1856 Henry Bessemer patented his new steel-making process, but it was soon found that it could not be applied to the majority of iron ores. Only through Mushet's discovery, also patented in 1856, of the beneficial effects of adding ferro-manganese to the blown steel, did the Bessemer process become a profitable commercial success. Ironically, Mushet's patent was allowed to lapse, and he derived little benefit from his discovery. His invention in 1868 of a self-hardening tungsten alloy steel was the forerunner of a whole family of tool steels. |
