| Archaeologist and anthropologist, born in Denver, Colorado, USA. A pioneer in ecologically oriented archaeology, he taught at the University of California, Berkeley (1946–75). He was a leading authority on pre-Columbian Californian archaeology and Mexican and Central American prehistory. He reported (with JA Graham, 1976) revolutionary evidence of Maya civilization originating on the Pacific coast of Guatemala. |
