| Editor and writer, born in Vader (formerly Little Falls), Washington, USA. His long career in magazine publishing included editorships at New Outlook, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated (1956–73). Best known for such proletarian novels of the 1930s as The Land of Plenty (1934), he also wrote biographies, including Nathaniel Hawthorne (1934) and the ornithologist Alexander Wilson (1961), and the historical study, The Hidden Northwest (1972). |
