| Playwright and writer, born in New Rochelle, New York, USA. He wrote his first play, Barnum Was Right, while at Harvard, and after service in World War 1 became editor of Life (1924–8) and a member of Dorothy Parker's celebrated Algonquin Round Table. He was awarded four Pulitzer Prizes, the first three for drama - Idiot's Delight, (1936), Abe Lincoln in Illinois (1939), and There Shall be No Night (1941) - and the last for his biographical Roosevelt and Hopkins (1949). |
