| biography:
| Sculptor, born in Sydney, New South Wales, SE Australia. He served in the Royal Australian Navy (1939–45), and later studied, worked, and exhibited in London and Paris. He spent the years 1957–63 in New York City. He was professor of sculpture at the University of Minneapolis (1966–7), after which he returned to Sydney. His sculptures are intricate and complex, often made of metal ‘found objects’ welded together (hence the name ‘junk sculpture’), although he did also work with wood, plaster, and bronze. He was Australia's senior and best-known sculptor. |
