| US statesman, born in New York City, USA. Educated at Harvard, Yale, and the London School of Economics, he became a lawyer, and joined the firm of Goldman, Sachs & Co in New York City (1966–93, co-chairman, 1990–2). He then joined the White House as assistant to the president for economic policy (1993–5), directing the activities of the National Economic Council. He became secretary of the Treasury in 1995, and was reappointed to this post in Clinton's 1997 administration. |
