| Actor, born in Manchester, Greater Manchester, NW England, UK. He worked on the stage in the 1920s, and had many leading film roles over the next 20 years, including The Thirty-nine Steps (1935), Good-bye, Mr Chips (1939, Oscar), The Young Mr Pitt (1942), and The Winslow Boy (1948). Ill health limited his later career, and his final appearance was in The Inn of the Sixth Happiness (1958), shortly before his death. |
