| biography:
| Housing administrator and cabinet member, born in Washington, District of Columbia, USA. A member of President Franklin Roosevelt's informal ‘Black Cabinet’ (1933–42), he became a New York housing commissioner (1954–9) and Federal Housing Agency administrator (1961–6), co-writing The Dilemma of Urban America (1965). As President Lyndon Johnson's secretary of housing and urban development (1966–9), and the first African-American cabinet member in US history, he promoted ‘demonstration cities’ funding. He then became president of Bernard Baruch College in New York City. |
