| Historian, born in New York City, New York, USA. He studied at Harvard and Oxford (1964 DPhil), and began as a reporter for the New York Times in New York and England before commencing a teaching career at Harvard (1965–8) and Princeton (1968). His interest in the social history of ideas resulted in a series of studies of books, writers, and public opinion in pre-Revolutionary France, including The Great Cat Massacre and Other Episodes in French Cultural History (1984). |
