| Publisher and writer, born in Peebles, Scottish Borders, SE Scotland, UK, the brother of William Chambers. He began as a bookseller in Edinburgh (1818), and gave his leisure to literary composition, writing many books on Scottish history, people, and institutions, and contributing regularly to Chambers's Edinburgh Journal. His son Robert Chambers (1832–88) became head of the firm in 1883, and conducted the Journal until his death. |
