| biography:
| Playwright and scriptwriter, born in Hampton Wick, Surrey, SE England, UK. He worked in his father's insurance company after leaving school, and as a claims adjuster after World War 1. Drawing on his wartime experiences, he wrote Journey's End (1929), based on life in a dugout on the Western Front. It became an immediate success in London, running for nearly 600 performances, and was staged all over the world. None of his later plays achieved the same impact, but he wrote the scripts for many films, including The Invisible Man (1933), Goodbye Mr Chips (1939), and The Dambusters (1955). |
