| biography:
| Painter, born in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. He studied at Rotterdam, and emigrated to the USA in 1926. By the 1950s he had emerged as a leader of the abstract expressionist movement, especially as seen in action painting. Among his best-known works is his controversial series ‘Woman I–VI’ (1952–3, New York City), with its violent, aggressive images. In his later years, he worked increasingly with clay sculptures. |
