| biography:
| Organic chemist, born in Fort Worth, Texas, USA. He studied at the University of California, Los Angeles, and from 1949 worked at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, New York City. There he devised (1959–62) the important and now much-used ‘solid phase’ method for synthesizing peptides and proteins from amino acids, for which he received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1984. |
