| biography:
| Writer and politician, born in London, UK. He studied at Harrow, and from 1869 was chiefly engaged in ranching in the Argentine, until he succeeded to the family estates in Scotland in 1883. He was Liberal MP for North-West Lanarkshire (1886–92), and the first president of the Scottish Labour Party in 1888. He wrote a great number of travel books, but is best known for his essays and short stories. He was elected the first president of the National Party of Scotland in 1928, and of the Scottish National Party in 1934. He died in Argentina, where he was known as ‘Don Roberto’. |
