| biography:
| Quaker, born in Gordonstoun, Moray, NE Scotland, UK. He studied at the Scots College in Paris, returning to Scotland (1664), where he became a Quaker in 1667. He published many tracts in defence of Quakerism, especially Apology for the True Christian Divinity (1678). He became one of the proprietors of East New Jersey in 1682, and was appointed its nominal non-resident governor. |
