| Canadian statesman, born in Toronto (formerly York), Ontario, SE Canada. He was called to the bar in 1825, and became a member of the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada in 1829. He condemned the Rebellion of 1837 and supported the Union of Upper and Lower Canada. With Louis Hippolyte LaFontaine he was joint prime minister of the united province of Canada (1842–3, 1848–51). |
