| biography:
| Writer, born in Butler, Missouri, USA. He studied at the University of Missouri (1925), graduated from Annapolis (1929), and did postgraduate work in physics at the University of California, Los Angeles (1934). Among other endeavours he worked as an engineer, owned a silver mine, and was the announcer for the Apollo lunar landing (1969). His first science fiction story, Life-Line, was published in 1939 and he became noted for his technical knowledge and detailed settings, as in Stranger in a Strange Land (1961). Later books include The Moon is a Harsh Mistress (1967). He was the first to be chosen as a Grand Master by the Science Fiction Writers of America (1975). |
