| biography:
| Economist, born in Ontario, SE Canada. He studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, then held posts at Chicago, Stanford, and Johns Hopkins universities, before joining the International Monetary Fund (1961). Later posts include professorships at the universities of Chicago (1966–71) and Columbia, New York (from 1974). He was awarded the 1999 Nobel Prize for Economics for his analysis of monetary and fiscal policy under different exchange rate regimes and his analysis of optimal currency areas. |
