| biography:
| Highland outlaw, born in Buchanan, Stirling, C Scotland, UK. Initially he was a grazier, but by 1712 he was in debt to James Graham, 1st Duke of Montrose, and began a life of briganding, chiefly at the expense of Montrose. He was distrusted by both sides during the Jacobite rebellion (1715), stealing from both without favour. After the rebellion he continued to raid Montrose, and was eventually captured and imprisoned in London. He was pardoned in 1727 while facing deportation. His life was romanticized in the novel by Sir Walter Scott. |
