| biography:
| Novelist and essayist, born in Semarang, former Netherlands East Indies. He worked as a teacher of Dutch language and literature. In his autobiographical works, his interest in Indonesian society is evident, and his Oost-Indische spiegel (1972, Mirror of the Indies) is regarded as a standard reference work in Dutch–Indonesian literature. In 1983 he was awarded the Constantijn Huygensprijs for his oeuvre. |
