| Writer, born in Llandaff, Cardiff, S Wales, UK, of Norwegian parents. Educated at Repton School, he worked for the Shell Oil Co in London and Africa, then served as a fighter pilot in the RAF during World War 2. He specialized in writing short stories of unexpected horror and macabre surprise, such as in Someone Like You (1953) and Kiss, Kiss (1960). His children's books display a similar taste for the grotesque, such as James and the Giant Peach (1961), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964), and BFG (1982); several have been made into successful films. |
