| Actor and manager, born in Cottingham, East Riding of Yorkshire unitary authority, NE England, UK. He studied in York, joined the Donald Wolfit players in 1943, served with the RAF, and formed his own company in Ilkley, Yorkshire (1948) and in Margate (1949). He established a reputation for farce at the Whitehall Theatre with productions of Reluctant Heroes (1950), Dry Rot (1954), Simple Spymen (1958), One for the Pot (1961), and Chase Me Comrade (1964). He also appeared in a number of films, such as Don't Just Lie There, Say Something (1974). After a further series of successful farces at the Garrick and Cambridge Theatres, he left the stage for charity work with the mentally handicapped and became chairman of Mencap (1988–98). He has published two volumes of autobiography, My Farce from My Elbow (1975) and Farce About Face (1989). He was knighted in 1986 and became a life peer in 1992. |
