| Comedienne and writer, born in Larchmont, New York, USA. She appeared as a film extra in 1951, and after graduating from college, became a fashion co-ordinator. She had parts in minor plays before working with the Chicago improvisational troupe Second City (1961–2), where she developed her acid-comedy routines. Success came with an appearance on The Tonight Show in 1965. She made her Las Vegas debut in 1969, wrote a regular column in the Chicago Tribune (1973–6), and became the regular guest host of The Tonight Show (1983–6). She hosted The Late Show (1986–7), Hollywood Squares (from 1987), and her own daytime talk show in 1989, and has also directed films, recorded albums, and written books, including Having a Baby Can Be a Scream (1974) and Bouncing Back (1997). |
