| Footballer, born in Recife, Brazil. After serving his apprenticeship with Paulista Recife, he signed his first professional contract with FC Santa Cruz in 1991, before moving to Mogi-Mirim, and then the legendary São Paulo club SC Corinthians in 1993. His next move was to rivals SE Palmeiras, where he won his first Brazilian championship in 1994. Joining Deportivo de La Coruña in 1996, he notched up 21 goals in his first season.The next year he transferred to FC Barcelona for €24 million as a replacement for Ronaldo, and in 2002 he joined Serie A side AC Milan. His many awards include the Ballon d'Or and the coveted FIFA World Footballer of the Year in 1999. Although Brazil lost (0–3) to France in the 1998 World Cup final, he was named in the FIFA All-Star Team of the tournament.
