| Baseball player, born in Havre de Grace, Maryland, USA. The Baltimore Orioles ‘Iron Man’ shortstop, he is famed for his all-time record of 2632 consecutive major league games from 1982 to 1999, beating the previous record of 2130 games held by Lou Gehrig in 1995. Ripken made his major league debut in 1981 and was American League Rookie of the Year in 1982. He was also the American League's Most Valuable Player in 1983 and 1991, and won the Golden Gloves in 1991 and 1992. Much taller than most shortstops (2·21 m/6 ft 5 in), he also hits with power, hitting more than 20 home runs every year from 1982 to 1991. He converted to third base in 1998, and by early 2000 he had career totals of 415 home runs and 3040 hits. He retired from major league baseball in 2001. His father, Cal Ripken Sr, played and coached at major league level. |
