| Footballer, born in Peckham, SE London, UK. A defender, he joined West Ham United as a schoolboy in 1995 and made his senior debut for the club in 1996. During the 1996–7 season he spent a period on loan to Bournemouth before returning to West Ham. He joined Leeds United in 2000 for a record fee of £18 million. He made his England debut in 1997, was a member of the England squad for the FIFA World Cup in 1998 and 2002, and by the end of the 2002 season had won 30 caps. He became the world's most expensive defender when he was bought by Manchester United in 2002 for £30 million. |
