| Essayist, born in Utrecht, W Netherlands. Highly talented, he was appointed professor of Greek language and culture at Utrecht University at the age of 18. He was an advocate of the innovative literature of Rousseau and the Romantic German writers brought about by the Enlightenment. He expressed his views on literature in three lengthy essays in 1765, 1766, and 1767. In 1786 his health forced him to cease his literary activities and leave The Netherlands for the more favourable climate of Switzerland. |
