| German airman, born in Wrocław, SW Poland (formerly Breslau, Prussia). At first in the cavalry, he later joined the German air force and, during World War 1, became commander of the 11th Chasing Squadron, more commonly known as ‘Richthofen's Flying Circus’ because of their decorated, scarlet aircraft. He was noted for his high number (80) of aerial victories. He was shot down behind the British lines. |
