| biography:
| Novelist and humorist, born in Wunsiedel, E Germany. He studied theology in Leipzig, then turned to literature, and after several years struggling to publish, began to teach (1787). He produced a wide range of works, achieving success with such romances as Die unsichtbare Loge (1793, The Invisible Lodge), Hesperus (1795), and the four-volume Titan (1800–3). |
