| biography:
| US naval officer, born in Portland, Oregon, USA. He served on battleships during World War 1 and was on the staff of the Naval War College (1935–8). He commanded the amphibious forces that launched the gruelling Guadalcanal campaign (1942), and planned and directed amphibious landings at Makin and Tarawa (1943), in the Marshall Is (1944), and at Iwo Jima and Okinawa (1945). He was the naval representative on the United Nations Military Staff Committee (1945–7). |
