| biography:
| Landscape painter, born in Penygroes, Powys, E Wales, UK. He began as a portrait painter, but after a visit to Italy (1752–6) turned to landscapes. In London in 1760 he exhibited his ‘Niobe’, and was recognized as one of the leading painters of his time. In 1776 he became librarian to the Royal Academy. |
