| Architect and designer, born in Munich, SE Germany. In 1897, after varied experience, he founded Werkstätten (‘craft workshops’) for which he designed functional and simple furniture, suitable for mass production. A major figure and influence in the development of 20th-c German design and industry, his enormous output over almost 50 years included architecture, furniture and interiors, glass and ceramics, cutlery, light-fittings, and graphics. |
