| Writer and journalist, born in Westcliffe-on-Sea, Essex, SE England, UK. He was educated at Shrewsbury School and University College, Oxford. In 1962 he founded, together with Peter Cook and Willie Rushton (1937–96), the satirical magazine Private Eye, whose editor he remained until 1986. In 1992 he founded The Oldie, a lively magazine for older readers. He was television critic for The Spectator and became a columnist for the Observer in 1988. Other writings include the satirical Dear Bill: the Collected Letters of Denis Thatcher (1980), You Might As Well Be Dead (1986), and a biography of Malcolm Muggeridge (1995). |
