| biography:
| Multimillionaire businessman, born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, the father of John F, Robert, and Edward Kennedy. The grandson of an Irish Catholic immigrant, he studied at Harvard, then made a large fortune in the 1920s. During the 1930s he was a strong supporter of Roosevelt and the ‘New Deal’, and became ambassador to Britain (1938–40). After World War 2 he concentrated on fulfilling his ambitions of a political dynasty through his sons. He had married in 1914 Rose Fitzgerald, daughter of a local politician, John F Fitzgerald, also of Irish immigrant descent. They had nine children, at whose political disposal he placed his fortune. The eldest son, Joseph Patrick (1915–44), was killed in a flying accident; the others achieved international political fame. |
