| Economic historian, born in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), E India. He studied at Balliol College, Oxford, was elected a fellow there in 1918, and wrote a number of studies in English economic history, notably of the Tudor and Stuart periods. Active in the Workers' Educational Association, he became its president (1928–44). An ardent Christian and social reformer, his works include The Acquisitive Society (1926) and Religion and the Rise of Capitalism (1926). He became professor of economic history at the London School of Economics (1931–49, then emeritus). |
