| biography:
| Composer, conductor, and teacher, born in Sydney, New South Wales, SE Australia. He studied at the New South Wales Conservatory and the University of California, where he researched the music of Japan, Java, and Bali. Returning to Australia he made an immediate impact with his compositions Los Alboradas (1963) and Homage to Garcia Lorca (1964). From 1969 he was reader in music at Adelaide University. His first opera Voss (1982), with a libretto by David Malouf based on the novel by Patrick White, demonstrates the strength of his orchestral and vocal writing, and is part of the Australian Opera's repertoire. His second opera, Mer de Glace, again with a libretto by Malouf, was premiered in 1991. |
