| Lawyer and mayor, born in Michigan City, Indiana, USA. Much involved in Gary, IN politics as deputy prosecutor and city councillor (1963–6), he became the city's mayor (1968–88), one of the first African-American mayors of a large city. In 1988 he became president of R Gordon Hatcher & Associates. He failed in his bid to regain the mayorship in 1991. |
