biography: US inventor of masking tape. A salesman for a manufacturer of sandpaper, he recognized the need in the motor trade for an adhesive tape that could be removed without damaging the paint of the vehicle to which it was applied. With the backing of his employers, 3M, he developed masking tape by 1925, and Scotch Cellulose Tape by 1930, transforming the fortunes of the previously struggling company.
