| biography:
| Broadcaster and author, born in London, UK. He studied in Cambridge, worked as an actor and teacher, and joined the BBC as an announcer in 1950. He became known as a television newsreader (1954–82), and as a commentator on major state occasions. He also introduced the television productions of BBC Promenade Concerts (1960–95), and has presented many radio series, such as Start the Week with Richard Baker (1970–87). He was BBC radio personality of the year in 1984. His books include The Magic of Music (1975), London, a theme with variations (1989), and Richard Baker's Companion to Music (1993). |
