| US governor and senator, born in Winder, Georgia, USA. He served Georgia, first as governor (Democrat, 1931–3), then in the US Senate (1933–71). A master of the filibuster, he was the leader of the Southern Democratic opposition to civil rights, and was an influential hawk during the Vietnam War. In 1952 he made an unsuccessful bid for the Democratic presidential nomination. |
