| Merchant, born in Settle, North Yorkshire, N England, UK. The son-in-law of Benjamin Franklin, he emigrated to New York City (1765), settled in Philadelphia, and in 1767 married Sarah Franklin. During the Revolution he was on the Board of War, and succeeded his father-in-law as postmaster general (1776–82). His family firm issued private insurance policies and engaged in business with the West Indies and Newfoundland. |
