| US representative, born in St Louis, Missouri, USA. A lawyer and Democratic alderman in St Louis, he went to the US House of Representatives in 1977. Identified with the liberal wing of the party, he ran for the Democratic nomination as president in 1986, losing to Michael Dukakis. He became house majority leader in 1989, and house minority leader in 1995, a post he resigned from after his party sustained heavy losses in the mid-term elections in 2002. |
