| Chemist, born in Gdańsk, N Poland (formerly Danzig, Germany). At Wrocław (formerly Breslau, Prussia), he was one of the first chemists to perceive the chemical significance of the newly-discovered (1897) electron, and his ‘rule of eight’ (1904) concerning the electric basis of linkages between atoms was an important stage in the development of modern valency theory. |
