| Italian politician, born in Regalbuto, Sicily, S Italy. He was active in the anti-Fascist movement and was arrested by the Fascists in 1930. One of the founding members of the Partito d'Azione (Action Party), he organized the Italian resistance, and in 1945 was among the negotiators of the Italian surrender. He was a deputy of the Constituent Assembly and transport minister. He joined the PSI (Partito socialista italiano) and supported the formation of a centre-left government, but then became disillusioned. The leader of the left-wing of the party, he became PSI's president in 1980. |
