| biography:
| Playwright and civil servant, born in Madrid, Spain, the son of Ventura de la Vega. He was possibly the most distinguished of the many género chico writers. La canción de la Lola (1880), with music by Valverde and Chueca, was his most popular work until 1886, the year of Pepa la frescachona, o el colegial desenvuelto, a colourful sainete. His characters were the men and women of Madrid in their familiar settings, providing for the middle class light entertainment such as El señor Luis el tumbón, o Despacho de huevos frescos (1891) and La verbena de la paloma, o el boticario y las chulapas, y Celos mal reprimidos (1894) with music by Bretón, this time set among the lower classes, a sainete performed more than 25,000 times. |
